3 Athletes, 3 Individual Exercises by Bob Mims, CPA

Bob Mims is a CPA with 28 years of solid experience in accounting and finance. He has taken on key roles in various organizations, from Chief Financial Officer to Corporate Controller and Director of Investments. His current position is Executive Financial Consultant.

Having worked in various capacities for different organizations, Bob Mims, CPA, has been immersed in diverse dynamics in the workplace. One of the most common factors he’s observed in organizations with lackluster performance is the lack of teamwork among members. It’s unfortunate, Bob notes, because these organizations have great potential, but they are unable to fully tap into it because it’s “every man for himself” in these organizations. He believes that if only leaders of these organizations take the initiative to help their employees forge a strong bond, everyone will be the better for it.

Here, Bob Mims, CPA shares off-season training exercises that some of the most celebrated professional athletes today undertake to get them ready for the season’s games. These individual exercises can be used as inspiration for team building activities for organizations.

Zumba, Stephen Curry

Stephen Curry works on his foot coordination through Zumba classes. Yes, NBA’s celebrated MVP isn’t shy about showing his dancing skills on the floor! Zumba classes are a good form of exercise, and they’re fun, too. Employees will enjoy Zumba classes, and in the process, forge what could be the beginning of great friendships.

Dodgeball, Dwyane Wade

Who doesn’t love a good game of dodgeball? Dwyane Wade has made dodgeball part of his off-season training, on top of his strength training and conditioning. Bob Mims, CPA suggests that employees schedule dodgeball at least one weekend every month. It’s good practice for teamwork, and a good workout as well.

Pool workout, Joakim Noah

This activity may require a bit more planning than the other two mentioned above, but swimming is never a dull activity. Employees can do laps and make a contest out of it. After the pool workout, a good barbecue is the best post-workout bonding activity.

Bob Mims, CPA recommended these bonding activities because they get everyone out of the office, which could encourage non-work-related conversations, which is always a good start to bonding with someone. Get everyone’s vote on which one they would like to do first, and then work these into the team’s schedule. Spending time with one another out of the office can help improve workplace relationships.
